We’re excited to announce the launch of the Ealing Trailfinders Walking Rugby Club.

Sessions will run twice every week, at Trailfinders Sports Club, on Tuesday evenings from 6-7pm (from the 14th of May)and on Wednesday mornings between 10-11am (from the 15th of May). Anyone, male or female over the age of 14 will be welcome and the sessions will be free although a donation of £5 per player per session towards Foundation funds will be suggested by cash or card! This will cover the cost of coaching, pitch hire and equipment through the season.

Walking Rugby is a rapidly growing form of the game that enables players who may not be able to take part in the contact form of the game to maintain their competitive edge in a friendly and fun environment. The game is played with seven players on each side and ‘tackles’ are made by means of a two handed touch when a pass must be made.

Typically, teams consist of former players returning to the game, along with those who have never played any form of Rugby before. The natural demographic of Walking Rugby leans towards players who are aged 50 and over and is a valuable and enjoyable way of maintaining activity and health levels among this age group.

Sessions will be run by the Community Department’s  Mike O’Regan who has three years experience of starting and maintaining a walking rugby section at Chobham RFC.

The success of this venture will be judged on

  • The number of players who regularly attend sessions and we will look to have a minimum of 10 attending after the first two months
  • Attracting new attendees to home matches – we will look to have 10 walking rugby attendees at every pro team home game next season
  • The building of a new competitive team that will compete in Walking Rugby festivals and tournaments over the Spring and Summer months.

We also have Mixed Ability Rugby that uses rugby themed games to provide a fun environment for people of all abilities to stay active and make friends.  This runs alongside our Walking Rugby Club every Tuesday from 6-7pm and is open to those with or without disabilities, but will not involve competitive matches.
